Island info:
Twenty six miles by twelve, diamond shaped..
The Island for those who may not know is situated a few miles south of Portsmouth / Southampton, ferries run constantly both car and passenger, there are a couple of small airports, no bridges or rail links to the mainland are connected, at present there are 134,000 pemanent residents which increases dramaticaly in the holiday season..
We have many nice beaches and places to just stroll about, the island is known for its coastal walks where if your keen enough you can walk around the entire coastline, stop off at numerous pubs and cafe's for a bite to eat, the whole island is crossed with hundreds of walkways inland also, quite a few cycleways as well, there are too many attractions to list here but on a rainy day you can still get out and about.
The Island is split into two halfs regarding busy and quiet areas, East Wight is the busy hotel and people side, Ryde / Sandown / Shanklin,
West Wight Freshwater / Totland / Yarmouth etc is very much quieter and more as nature intended, the choice is yours, Cowes the most northern of towns is very busy during Cowes week (August) at other times its splendid for boat / ship watching with a nice walk to Gurnard along the prom, Ventnor now has a splendid beachfront area but has deep water, Ryde / Appley is good for toddlers as the sand stretches for hundreds of yards and is shallow..
General:
Most visited..
A little bit of info came my way the other day, what is the most visited place on the Island, summer and winter, its Osborne house the last residence of Queen Victoria, it has thousands of people turn up for a look every year, don't miss it..Number two is Carisbrooke castle and is also one of the best kept castles on the south coast..
Lots of people visit Godshill but most miss the BEST thing there; Tucked away on the end of the high street is the MODEL VILLAGE, you tend to think of all the others you have seen, well think again, its a secret garden and lots more. I dont usually blow trumpets about visitor places but this is a GEM, attention to detail is superb, but thats not all, it is set in one of the BEST collections of Conifers you will ever see. If there were bronze, silver, and gold star ratings for places which you must see the MODEL VILLAGE gets a gold star..
